Two Derry Men with Egyptian Protestors who broke siege of Gaza 6th March

Eamonn McCann says that Derry people “should be proud” of the two Derry men, Eanna O Donghaile and Eddie McBride, who have broken the siege of Gaza . marched with hundreds of Egyptian protesters from the Tahrir4Gaza campaign from Tahrir Square in Cairo to the Rafah border crossing. The Tahrir4Gaza group was set up by Egyptians who say that the overthrow of Mubarak means that their country should no longer police the siege of Gaza for the Israelis.

The marchers had to pass through more 12 military checkpoints to get to Rafah. After days of argument and protest, the Derry men were able to enter Gaza today, Sunday 6th March.

Eamonn McCann said: “the bag of cement which the lads were able to bring with them was symbolic – it is the first bag of cement that has entered Gaza from Egypt openly, rather than through tunnels. It came about because the Tahrir4Gaza people threatened to set up a Tahrir Square- like permanent camp at the border.”
