Israel is now using mass starvation as a weapon to drive people out of Gaza. This shocking war crime is occurring with the full complicity of the US.
The US is trying to deflect responsibility by starting to drop food. But it is minuscule and does not replace the supplies that entered Gaza on the ground.
Up to October 7th, over 500 trucks a day entered Gaza. But the Israelis have deliberately slowed the supply of humanitarian aid to a trickle.
They spun a story, without a shred of evidence, to cut off aid to UNRWA, the main humanitarian agency in Gaza. Ever since the US has cut off funding to the agency.
The Israelis also use the pretext of searches on trucks to slow down the provision of food.
When one truck got through last week, they opened fire on desperate people, killing one hundred.
In a cynical move, they claimed they died from a stampede. But scores of the dead were found with bullet wounds in their backs.
It is now abundantly clear that Israel is using mass starvation as a weapon of war to drive people out of Gaza and then to re-populate it with Israeli settlers.
National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has said “We must promote a solution to encourage the emigration of the residents of Gaza”
Ben-Gvir is a far-right politician and some of his supporters have actively blocked trucks entering Gaza.
The US has been supporting Israel to the hilt. It is their watchdog in the region. It sends over €3 billion in military aid to Israel each year and has been supplying them with bunker-buster bombs. Each warhead weighs over 900 kilograms. In December the US supplied Israel with one hundred of these bombs.
The Wall Street Journal reports that since the start of the war, the US has supplied 15,000 bombs and 57,000 artillery shells to Israel.
However, the US is now coming under pressure as people watch the horror in Gaza. So they stage PR stunts claiming to drop food parcels or having Joe Biden say that a ceasefire is about to begin, as he licks his ice cream in a New York deli.
It is disgusting.
The least we can do is tell the Irish government and all political parties that they should not attend the Shamrock Fest in Washington on St Patrick’s Day.
If any party made this tiny gesture, it would ricochet around the world as, finally, an EU-based country was doing something rather than just talking sympathy.
Leo Varadkar, Michelle O’Neil, and Mary Lou McDonald all say they are going. They should be told to think again.
