SHAMEFUL THAT TAOISEACH WOULD INVITE TRUMP – A PROMOTER OF HATE, WAR, & ENVIRONMENTAL DESTRUCTION

ALL WHO CARE ABOUT EQUALITY, PEACE AND THE FUTURE OF OUR PLANET SHOULD TAKE TO THE STREETS IN PROTEST

In a statement reacting to the news that US President Donald trump will visit Ireland in November, People Before Profit TD, Richard Boyd Barrett has described Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s decision to welcome Trump to Ireland as “shameful.”

Deputy Boyd Barrett, who was one of the key organisers of the enormous street protests against the US led Iraq war in 2003, said he has already contacted other groups, organisations and parties with a view to organising major demonstrations when Trump arrives.

Deputy Boyd Barrett said:

“Donald Trump is a promoter of hatred, war and environmental destruction. His odious politics have made the world a more dangerous and divided place.

I urge everyone who cares about equality, peace, solidarity and the future of our planet to join the protests that we are now planning against Donald Trump and all he stands for.

He has stirred up filthy racism against migrants, Muslims and other minorities. He has encouraged the growth of openly fascist and far-right parties across the world.  He has encouraged and legitimised sexism and homophobia. He has effectively declared war on the Palestinians by recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and withdrawing US funding from the UN in Gaza.

At every level, Donald Trump has stirred conflict and division and it simply beggars belief that Leo Varadkar thinks it appropriate to bring him here to promote and legitimise his filthy and dangerous politics.

Opposing Trump is not a protest against the American people, it is a protest in solidarity with the tens of millions of American’s who are the victims and opponents of Trump’s hateful politics.”
