The proposed Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty would provide a global roadmap to halt the expansion of fossil fuel, manage an equitable phase-out of coal, oil and gas, and lay the foundations for a true just energy transition in which no worker, community or country is left behind.
People Before Profit South Dublin County Councillor Jess Spear said 'I’m delighted that my motion for South Dublin County Council to back the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty passed yesterday. South Dublin County Council now joins more than 130 cities around the world in calling for a halt to fossil fuel use. I hope other councils will follow suit.'
Last month the average global temperature exceeded 1.75C above pre-industrial levels. We are seeing a rapid increase in catastrophic weather events across the planet, and our own country is still recovering from Storm Éowyn two weeks after it struck.
We must end our dependence on fossil fuels. It’s more than 30 years since the publication of the first report from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warning us of the dangers of fossil fuel-driven climate change. Despite this, last year €500 billion was invested globally in more oil and gas. We urgently need to end this expansion and we need to rapidly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. There is no more time to lose.
Jess Spear said, 'I've no illusions that my motion alone will force the government to sign the treaty or to abandon their data centre policy, which is a major block on fully transitioning to renewables and ending our reliance on fossil fuels. The point is to apply pressure from every possible position. We did this yesterday and we will continue to do it until our dependence on fossil fuels has ended.'
