Government need to put their money where their mouth is and follow through quickly on measures contained in motion
People Before Profit has welcomed the Dail’s passing of the motion put forward by Mick Barry for an emergency review of the minimum wage.. The party however noted that the government, politically, had no choice but to back the motion but that it was clear that it has no intention to actually implement it.
TD Paul Murphy said: “It is welcome that the Dáil unanimously passed the motion brought forward by Mick Barry. . The government clearly had no other choice because of the acuteness of the cost of living crisis and the palpable anger that people are feeling all over the country.
“What is the real test though, however, is whether the government will put its money where its mouth is and actually follow through quickly on implementing the measures. It seems from their speeches that they have no intention of actually initiating an emergency review of the minimum wage with an increase by 1 May. It is just a cynical move to avoid the shame of voting against a minimum wage increase when the cost of living is rocketing.
