People Before Profit to vote no confidence in government that has run out of road and lost credibility
Richard Boyd Barrett TD todayoutlined the details of the People Before Profit Private Members Bill, the Rent Reduction Bill 2022, which will be debated on Wednesday morning.
He said: “The government is trying to claim that those voting no confidence in them are doing so cynically. But we have very good reasons for voting no confidence. The government has failed to solve the cost of living crisis and the housing and rental crisis, despite the opposition proposing positive measures to attempt to do so. Yet another example of this will come this week as we in People Before Profit will use our Private Members Time to bring our Rent Reduction Bill to the Dáil.
“We are calling on all parties and independents in this Dáil to back this bill so that we can reduce rents to affordable levels. This bill would reduce rents to affordable levels by limiting them to a maximum of a quarter of median monthly household income and to establish a National Rent Authority to oversee this.
“If the government does not vote for this bill then people out there should be aware that their public reps are voting for their rents to stay sky high.”
People Before Profit has also confirmed that they will be voting no confidence in the government during the government’s motion of confidence debate today in Dáil Éireann.
Paul Murphy TD said: “This government has run out of road and has lost all credibility. It is clear that they are unable to bring in the type of measures that would give people real assistance during the cost of living crisis. We will be voting no confidence in this government today.
“Rents are at shockingly high levels, the cost of food and energy are astronomical and the price of fuel continues to soar. The government has resisted every attempt from the opposition to bring in the measures needed to to help people effectively. They have decided that they are happy enough to go off on their summer holidays rather than deliver a package of measures this summer. This is unacceptable. People cannot wait for the budget for help. We need to get rid of this government so that we can form a left government that would take the necessary socialist measures to end the housing crisis, protect people from the cost of living crisis, tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis and establish a national health service by nationalising private hospitals and healthcare.”
