People Before Profit Is Your Ticket To Free Public Transport

People Before Profit Environment spokesperson, Paul Murphy and party leader Richard Boyd Barrett visited St Stephen Green shopping centre Luas stop today to highlight People Before Profit’s election manifesto call for the abolition of all fares on public transport.

Deputy Murphy said “Today we highlight our election manifesto call for free and frequent public transport to reduce emissions and to end car pollution and traffic jams.

‘The transport sector in Ireland is the second highest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions, after agriculture. Transport emissions increased in 2023 and were up again by 2.7% in the first quarter of 2024 as petrol sales increased by almost 10%.

‘Eamon Ryan’s transport and climate policies have delivered rising transport emissions, rising pollution and endless traffic chaos. He has wasted almost 5 years in office, so now we need emergency action, starting with the immediate abolition of all public transport fares to reduce emissions and traffic.

‘Today we also highlighted our manifesto pledge to double capital investment in public transport infrastructure and the allocation of €500 million towards rapid expansion of bus services. This is necessary immediately to make public transport frequent as well as free. We also commit to return privatised bus routes into public control.”
