Speaking as DUP elected representatives encouraged people to publicly oppose social housing being built on the Hillview site of North Belfast, People Before Profit Cllr in the area Fiona Ferguson has criticised their ‘divisive’ move. She said:
“I challenge any of the DUP elected representatives encouraging opposition to social housing in North Belfast to justify their actions to people languishing on waiting lists.
“We’ve seen this tactic time and again; when the big parties are under pressure or down in the polls, they deflect to the politics of division. Ironically, the DUP and unionism more generally is in crisis because of exactly this kind of reactionary politics. This latest move will only deepen that crisis.
“Now more than ever, we need a socialist alternative that unites communities across the North. People Before Profit have campaigned for housing on Hillview for years and we will continue to do so.”
