People Before Profit candidate in Dublin South East, Annette Mooney, rejects call by Catholic Church for a fourth referendum on abortion, and calls on the Government to immediately legislate for abortion where the mother’s life is at risk.
“There is no need for yet another long, acrimonious debate about the rights and wrongs of abortion,” said Ms Mooney. “Yesterday’s European Court judgement is very clear, and is binding on the Irish Government, despite what the Catholic Primate Cardinal Sean Brady may wish. The government must now introduce legislation in line with the X case.”
Cardinal Brady is reported today as having said there was no need to legislate on foot of the Strasbourg court’s decision. The European Court of Human Rights ruled the Irish State had violated the human rights of a woman with cancer who had to travel abroad to get an abortion..
“The Irish State has resisted vindicating Irish women’s human rights for 18 years now,” said Ms Mooney. “It was called on to legislate by our Supreme Court in 1992. It can no longer keep Irish women outside the international human rights family. No more Irish women should have to suffer the trauma of being unable to access abortion services in their own country when to continue their pregnancy would endanger their life. This is a fundamental human rights issue and the Irish State cannot turn its back on its own citizens any longer.”
Annette Mooney is standing in Dublin South East for the People Before Profit and United Left Alliance.
