People Before Profit Candidate for Tralee Town Council

CANDIDATE PROFILE: SEÁN MORAGHAN (Tralee) People Before Profit Alliance

Seán Moraghan (People Before Profit Alliance) is a shop-worker and bookseller in Tralee. He is 45 years old.

He is standing for election to Tralee Town Council.

Seán has been a council worker, tour guide, mussel-boat farmer, writer and political activist.

Seán has been involved in the local anti-parking charges campaign, protests for a better health service, opposition to education cuts, Tralee Anti-War Group, Shell to Sea, and campaigns against the G8 in support of fairer trade, and human rights activism.

He is a member of the Mandate trade union.

PbP has been active in Kerry since 2007.

"We have also been involved in the remarkable budget protests of 2008, and took part in the subsequent education cutback demonstrations in Cork and Dublin, which was attended by many Kerry parents, teachers and schools students. More Recently we were involved in protests against Israel’s barbaric assault on Gaza".

Most recently Seán helped to establish the Tralee Anti-Racism Networ, and supports the Tralee “Transition Towns” initiative.

Says Seán: “The coming local election on June 5th gives us an opportunity to move from street protests to mounting a campaign based on two simple concepts: “Why do WE have to pay for THEIR crisis?” And, lets find a better way to live, and work, together.

Tralee is facing cutbacks to health care and education, the prospect of local authority service charges, reductions in facilities like crèches and home-helps, cuts in Primary teachers and a workforce reeling under job losses, a wage levy, and, for public service workers, a so-called Pension Levy.

If we are to oppose those measures, voters have to think about withdrawing support for the political parties and candidates who implement or support those actions. We need to build opposition to those policies. We need spokespeople who will voice public anger. In short, we need People Before Profit and a seat on Tralee Town Council. What that will give us is a public platform from which to denounce the cutbacks, and to try and argue for different solutions, and a different kind of society and economy. And it will send a signal to Fianna Fail (and their brothers and sisters, Fine Gael), that the era of Right-wing economic policies, those policies that have brought us to national ruin and local crisis, is over.”
