People Before Profit Alliance’s Eamonn McCann has called on Translink to “think again”

People Before Profit Alliance’s Eamonn McCann has called on Translink to “think again” on the plan to reduce the Derry-Dublin bus service.

“Cutting the number of buses on the route from 11 a day to as few as five is drastic”, said the PBPA spokesperson. “The regular buses to Dublin have made Dublin Airport much more accessible to people from the North West. To curtail the service is to remove an amenity of some value to local people for holiday or business or just visiting Dublin.

“As we understand it, pressure from CIE in the South has been a factor in the decision. At the moment, Ulsterbus takes the fares for Dublin-Monaghan, CIE the fares from Monaghan to Derry. CIE, we are told, feels aggrieved that there are more passengers travelling Dubln-Monaghan than Monaghan-Derry.

“But if this is the case, the solution lies in negotiation between the two companies – not this drastic cut in services. Haven’t we enough cuts affecting local life at the moment?

Mr. McCann concluded: “We urge Translink to Think Again”.
