People Before Profit Alliance Councillors condemns Labour and Fine Gael for passing on government cuts in Council budgets.

In the face of proposed cuts in local services the People Before Profit Alliance is holding a press conference to announce the start of a campaign to oppose increases in local charges and cuts in services.

On Monday (21st Dec) Dublin City Council will agree a budget including cuts in basic services and jobs and increases in bin charges of 5% and the removal of the waiver for bin charges from the low paid and social welfare recipients. This will hit 40,000 pensioners and social welfare recipients many of whom are facing cuts in their payments as a result of the government budget announced last week. An already underfunded fire service faces further cuts which will endanger lives.

Services and jobs across the four Dublin councils will be hit due to a cut in government funding for councils. In effect, the Labour and Fine Gael majorities on the Dublin councils are implementing these cuts while posing as an opposition in the Dail.

People Before Profit will be seeking the support of councillors throughout the country for a campaign of opposition to increases in local charges and cuts in services.
