People Before Profit calls for opposition to Sinn Fein/DUP proposed education cuts in Northern Ireland

The Irish National Teachers Organisation (INTO) has described proposed cuts to the education budget in the North as “unprecedented in their ferocity and highly alarming” and likely to see between 4 and 5,000 teaching jobs being cut. The cuts, proposed by Sinn Fein Minister for Education, Catriona Ruane, amount to a staggering £871 million over the next four years.

DEBATE ON AUSTERITY AT FEILE AN PHOBAIL

This year’s Feile an Phobail festival in West Belfast featured an important debate between Sinn Fein , People Before Profit and the Workers Party.

Joe Austin for Sinn Fein argued that his party was blocking austerity and was willing to collapse the Stormont agreement if others tried to push it through.

However, this claim was challenged by Kieran Allen from People Before Profit who cited the INTO figure that 3,000 teaching posts will be lost.

People Before Profit Councillor on Freedom Waves to Gaza

Councillor Hugh Lewis participates in latest attempt to break the siege of Gaza
Following a call for international solidarity from 46 civil society organisations in Gaza, which include Teachers Associations, the Public Service Workers Union, the Health Service Workers Union, youth groups and rehabilitation centres, the Irish ship MV Saoirse and a Canadian ship MV Tahrir have set sail as part of an initiative called Freedom Waves to once more break the siege of Gaza.

The situation in Gaza is worsening. The humanitarian crisis is escalating daily with the continuing siege by the Israelis. As of 1 January 2012, approximately 600,000 refugees will not receive their three month food ration from the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency) because as a result of the siege most people are dependent on aid relief from the UN agency.

The Freedom Flotilla which had attempted to sail in June was prevented from sailing from Greece by Israeli pressure. The Irish ship, the MV Saoirse, was sabotaged while docked in Turkey at the time but has since been repaired.

The boats, two civilian vessels, carrying 27 passengers from seven countries, are currently in international waters en route to Gaza.

People Before Profit Councillor Hugh Lewis (Ballybrack) is participating in this humanitarian and solidarity mission with Socialist Party MEP Paul Murphy, Sinn Fein representatives and others from civil society.

At 11.30am today the ships were 225 nautical miles from Gaza, 99 nautical miles w/sw of Cyprus and they expect to reach the port of Gaza sometime tomorrow if they are allowed to continue without interception by the Israelis.

A real political alternative: United Left Alliance (ULA) formed

United Left Alliance: Building a Real Political Alternative

The economic crisis is resulting in an unprecedented onslaught on living standards, spiralling mass unemployment and a dramatic rise in poverty. Meanwhile billions is being taken from working people and given to bankers, builders and international speculators.

The newly formed United Left Alliance (ULA) which involves  the People Before Profit Alliance, the Socialist Party & the South Tipperary Workers and Unemployed Action Group, is opposed to the governments’ bailouts and the slash and burn policies which are only making the crisis worse. In the general election we aim to provide a real alternative to the establishment parties as well as Labour and Sinn Fein, who also accept the capitalist market and refuse to rule out coalition with right wing parties. The approach of a Fine Gael / Labour government in power would not be fundamentally different than this government.

The ULA will be standing candidates throughout the country and we are inviting all people, campaigns and groups that want to fight for real change and who agree with our demands to become part of the Alliance.

The United Left Alliance (ULA):
1. Rejects so-called solutions to the economic crises based on slashing public expenditure, welfare payments and workers’ pay. There can be no just or sustainable solution to the crisis based on the capitalist market. Instead we favour democratic and public control over resources so that social need is prioritised over profit.
