Speaking outside Shannon LNG’s address on Molesworth Street, Dublin 2 this morning, People Before Profit Environment spokesperson Paul Murphy said;
“People Before Profit is the only party that has included a call to ban new fossil fuel infrastructure, including LNG infrastructure, in our general election manifesto.
On Wednesday, the latest international Climate Change Performance Index report was published. It called on the Irish government to permanently ban any type of LNG terminal, as well as calling for reinstatement of a legally robust moratorium on new data centres.
LNG is not mentioned at all in the manifestos of Sinn Féin and the Social Democrats, while the Labour Party and the Green Party fudge this issue by saying they will look to avoid it without giving any guarantees. As we know, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael actively support new fossil fuel infrastructure, including LNG terminals.
We need a just and rapid transition from fossil fuels. We need free and frequent public transport, we need free retrofitting of homes. There can be no more data centres or fossil fuel and LNG infrastructure.
We face an escalating climate crisis, but in this election it’s only People Before Profit that will stand up to the vested interests in the tech sector, the big agri sector and the fossil fuel industries. It’s only People Before Profit that offer the just and rapid transition that we need.”
