The Irish Neutrality League has been formed to combat the deliberate and steady erosion of Ireland’s Neutral Status.
In the summer, Varadkar stated that he was confident that he could win a referendum to get Ireland to join a European army. This would in turn be closely linked to NATO.
In line with this, Ireland has signed up to PESCO which commits us to spend 2% of GDP on the military. There is no promise to spend that same amount on building social housing- even though there is a massive housing crisis.
All of this explains why the Irish government is not speaking up for peace in the Ukraine war. Instead, it has contributed €55 million to a Western fund to intensify the war.
The strategy of eroding neutrality also explains why the political establishment mounted a ferocious campaign against Sabina Higgins because she dared to advocate peace.
The Irish Neutrality League is a broad-based umbrella group that will hold a gathering on ‘How to Defend Ireland’s Neutrality’ on Saturday October 15th from 2pm to 5pm at the Teachers Club, Parnell Square Dublin.
