“In making a fuss about flying the rainbow flag to mark Pride Arlene Foster and the DUP have once again shown their true colours.
They say they want a ‘shared’ society but they can’t contain their homophobia. They say legislation for equality can happen if the Assembly is restarted because they no longer have the votes to block marriage equality – but how can we trust them? We can’t. They’ve no respect for equality.
The LGBT community and our allies have spent decades campaigning and changing attitudes. We have a lot of work to do in order to eradicate the scourge of homophobia but a clear majority of people from all backgrounds and communities support marriage equality. That’s what people power does.
The first Pride was a riot. We will stay on the streets to make sure our demands are heard. We won’t stop until we have full civil rights. We encourage everyone who supports progress to join the Foyle Pride parade on Saturday August 25th. Let’s make it loud and proud. Let’s make our beautiful city of Civil Rights heroism a sea of rainbow flags.”
