Chronic waiting list and overcrowding crisis can only be tackled through mass recruitment of health staff to public system
People Before Profit TD and health spokesperson Gino Kenny TD has said that today’s HIQA report into overcrowding in University Hospital Limerick is “yet another indication of the failure of the government to tackle the chronic crisis of waiting lists and overcrowding in our public hospitals.”
Reacting to the report, he said: “This report lays bare the failure of this government, and successive governments, to tackle the overcrowding crisis in our public hospitals. Yet again we see another damning indication of the failure of Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Greens to bring the radical reforms needed to fix the serious issues in the health system.
“A quarter of the population is now on some form of waiting list for healthcare. What is needed is an urgent recruitment and retention campaign across all grades of health care frontline staff so that we can open more beds. Patients are being failed because of the government’s failure to take urgent and radical action.”
