Delays to three Dublin city regeneration projects in St Teresa's Gardens, Dolphin House and Emmet Road have resulted in the loss of almost 600 council houses, whilst almost 1,700 promised public homes have not yet been delivered it was reported this morning.
People Before Profit Dublin City Councillor Hazel De Nortúin said “This morning’s reports confirm what has been evident for many years - endless delays in delivery of social homes by Dublin City Council, reductions in the number of homes, removal of community sports and play amenities and infrastructure, and residents fearful of being left behind where they will be vulnerable to gang intimidation.
"It has been estimated that there have been delays of 20 years across three projects and the loss of 576 public homes, while 1,673 new homes that were promised have still not been delivered. Councillors are scheduled to receive a presentation on another regeneration in Basin Lane today, but it is difficult to have confidence in what we will be told when we know the delivery performance of Dublin City Council is dismal. It has demonstrated time and again its complete indifference to the city’s tenants.
"We need a transformational approach to social housing. The incoming government must increase the annual social housing target from 10,000 to 25,000 per year, and crucially it must establish a state construction company to ensure speedy and cost effective delivery of the tens of thousands of high quality homes that we urgently need in Dublin and across the state."
