Donie Fell, a Glass Blower for 38 years at Waterford Crystal will stand as a People Before Profit Alliance candidate in Waterford City South in the forthcoming local elections with the endorsement of UNITE the Union.

He has been a Trade Union representative and campaigner all his working life, having served on the Waterford Crystal Joint Negotiating Committee for many years. He was also a member of the National Executive Committee of the ATGWU for three electoral periods and was an executive member of the WCTU holding the position of treasurer for four years.

Donie is standing in this election to highlight the disgraceful treatment of Workers and their families by this Fianna Fail led Government and because he believes that people want Work not Dole.

With over 13000 in Waterford unemployed and 500,000 people nationally expected on the dole by the end of the year, getting people back to work is and must be the number one priority.

Donie has helped organize and taken part in many campaigns over the years including the ‘Housing Action Campaign’ carried out by the Flat Dwellers Association. The ‘Right to work’ and ‘Waterford wants Work’ campaigns.He was also part of the campaign for ‘Income Tax Reform and Equity’ in the 80s, when PAYE workers paid 90% of all income tax.

Donie was active in the anti-service charges campaign through his trade union helping to organise support for members and their communities in their battle against double taxation.

As a senior Union representative at Waterford Crystal, and in conjunction with his Union colleagues, Donie helped to initiate and organise the contribution of hundreds of thousands of pounds to numerous charities and causes over the last thirty years.

Donie Fell has a long record of involvement in sport, organising Schoolboy teams in both soccer and GAA.He is acutely aware of the vital role clubs play in local Communities, involving character building of young people to help them achieve their full potential.He is a firm believer in Local Authorities supporting the hard pressed club Volunteer.
