Retained firemen up and down the country are currently on strike. We need to shine a spotlight on their stories and ensure that their voices are heard.
The current system of running our retained fire service is outdated and no longer fit for purpose. The lack of pay, failure to retain and recruit staff, and the strict conditions on which they operate have pushed many to the point where they can no longer endure the constant high demands of the role.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting my local station in Tullow in Carlow, as they held an open evening. It was great to see the level of support they have from the community (see photo above).
Many of the current fire fighters stationed there are school classmates and friends. The stories that they shared of intense and traumatic call outs, disrupted family lives, and no respite from being on call – due to lack of numbers were cause for great concern. This goes back to how we supply and support the service.
Retained fire fighters cannot live on the income they receive. Many require additional social welfare payments just to get by. Having a second job is extremely challenging. This is because you have to be 5 minutes or less from the fire station at all times and free to leave your other job position whenever called.
The government need to address the following immediately:
- Improved remuneration/guaranteed wage
- Work life balance and increased structured time off
- Staff shortages
- Staff retention
These men are finished with working in a service that is not fit for purpose. Please sign the petition below to show your support.
