We are outraged at the brutal murder of Moïse Mugenyi Kabagambe in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil last Monday, January 24. According to the family, the young black immigrant was beaten to death after going to the beach stand where he worked to demand two days of back pay.
The assault was recorded by a security camera and shows at least 3 men, among whom is the stall manager, wrestling Moïse to the ground, kicking and beating him with a piece of wood.
Witnesses have reported that the beach stand continued to operate even after the murder and that customers were served with his body lying on the ground by the beach stand. That the business should continue even in the face of such tragedy shows how profit is being placed higher than workers lives.
We stand in solidarity with the Congolese community in Rio de Janeiro, with the wider Black community in Brazil who frequently face racist violence, and with all those protesting in demand of Justice for Moise this week.
