Belfast rally to take place tonight in solidarity with the rollback of Roe v Wade in America, and to demand local abortion services across the North. Speaking ahead of the rally People Before Profit Cllr Fiona Ferguson, who organised the event, said:
“The events in the US last week have horrified the international community. Here in Ireland, we know first-hand how dangerous and torturous it is when governments limit access to abortion. In Poland, too, where recent laws all but outlawed abortion, two women have already lost their lives.
“The rollback of abortion rights represents a step back in time for women. Hundreds of thousands of those women will now have to flout the law and access abortion without medical supervision where necessary.
“Locally, women are still continuing to travel to England for healthcare, despite the law being changed at Westminster. Robin Swann’s inaction is an abject failure, one which calls his role as Health Minister into question. It’s time for women to stand up, here and across the world, where our rights are under threat, and that’s exactly what we’re rallying for in Belfast.”
