MLA Gerry Carroll is set to propose a 10% rent reduction and subsequent rent freeze “to protect tenants facing cost of living crisis and unscrupulous landlords.”
Gerry has called on all parties to support his amendment to the Private Tenancies Bill, being heard at Stormont this Wednesday which would implement the rent reduction and freeze for tenants.
Gerry said:
“I am amending Minister Hargey’s Bill because it does not adequately address the hardship faced by too many renters. My amendment would reduce rents by 10% for a year, and implement a subsequent rent freeze for three years, aiding all in private rented accommodation.
“Over the last number of years the price of rent has soared, as wages have stagnated and a cost of living crisis has erupted. Despite this, no party of the Executive proposed measures which would reduce rents and protect those who are being priced out of their accommodation.
“A 10% rent reduction would be a welcome step toward redressing this and I am therefore calling on all parties to support it. This would help tackle unscrupulous landlords, and put money back into tenant’s pockets, when they need it most.”
