Campaign against Bus cuts in Rathcoole launched

140 people attended a lively meeting organised by People Before Profit Councillor Gino Kenny (pictured below) in the Rathcoole Community Centre recently.

The meeting agreed to campaign against Dublin Bus plans to cut back on the service to Rathcoole.

Dublin Bus wants to amalgamate services and proposes that the 68&69 bus routes will integrate with bus services at Clondalkin village or the Red Cow Luas Station. The plan will result in Rathcoole/Newcastle no longer having a direct bus service to city centre.
Bus routes 68&69 will now terminate at the Red Cow Luas Station.

No integrated ticketing system has yet been established so that move could mean that passengers will have to buy two tickets.

The changes will also mean considerable delays for the people of Rathcoole.

The meeting noted that cutbacks are part of the general price we are all paying for disastrous economic policies which allowed greedy bankers to bring ruin to the country.

The meeting agreed to

  1. Take up a mass petition in the area to indicate opposition. Copies of these petitions which can be taken around your area may be received from Gino Kenny. Ring 0857211574 or [email protected]

  2. To ask people to also make individual submissions to Dublin Bus consultation process. Some scepticism was expressed that this consultation might simply be a PR exercise. But nevertheless it was felt that Dublin Bus should be taken at their word and as many people as possible should write letters or submissions to the company. You can send submission by writing to Dublin Bus or e mailing then at [email protected]

  3. To hold a re-call meeting in February to consider further action.

Gino Kenny, is a Councillor for the Rathcoole- Clondalkin area and is standing in the General Election as part of the People Before Profit-United Left Alliance. The United Left Alliance is a new political formation which includes Joe Higgins MEP and Cllr Richard Boyd Barret.
