Calls For Urgent Government Action On HRT Shortages

Response to date “lethargic”

Calls for Minister Donnelly to meet with Novartis and HPRA over Estradot shortages

People Before Profit TD, and spokesperson on health, Gino Kenny, has described the government response to the HRT treatment shortages crisis as “lethargic” and is letting women down.

The Dublin Mid-West TD has called on Minister Donnelly to respond urgently to the crisis, which has been flagged before now, and to meet with the Estradot supplier, Novartis, in order to progress a solution to the issue.

The TD urged Minister Donnelly to provide subsidised alternatives for women suffering from the HRT shortages.

He said: “Women in Ireland have been dealing with intermittent interruptions in supply and availability of HRT therapies. They are being let down because of the lethargic nature of the response from government. This issue, which has been flagged for a long time now, needs a solution urgently and I am calling on the Minister for Health to meet with the company and the HPRA as soon as possible to progress a solution to this crisis. The government should provide subsidised alternatives and make these available to women.

“If this were a drug that affected 500,000 men, I can’t help but think that emergency measures would have been taken before now.”
