Bríd Smith Td Welcomes The Unlawful Killing Verdict For All 48 Victims Of The Stardust Fire

This afternoon the jury of the Stardust inquests has returned an unlawful killing verdict in each of the 48 deaths in the nightclub fire in 1981. The jury considered more than 90 days of evidence and heard testimony from more than 370 witnesses into the deaths.

People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith said “The jury found that the fire was caused by an electrical fault and that exits in the nightclub were locked and obstructed at the time of the fire and this impeded victims and contributed to their deaths”.

Deputy Smith said “Finally the families and loved ones of those killed and injured in the Stardust fire are getting justice. But it should not have taken 43 years to reach this unlawful killing verdict and I want to pay tribute to all those who campaigned for so long for justice. Our thoughts are with them at this time.”
