Belfast Community Meeting To Stop Evictions

Families fighting back against Housing Executive evictions to address public meeting tomorrow in west Belfast

Belfast Community Meeting To Stop Evictions

People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll is hosting a public meeting on the issue of Housing Executive evictions, following months of anti-eviction campaigning from tenants in west Belfast.

Since Housing Executive succession policy rules were tightened in September 2024, giving managers more scope to refuse requests for discretionary tenancy successions, a wave of evictions has taken place across west Belfast.

'The Housing Executive is on a ruthless crusade to evict tenants in the immediate aftermath of a bereavement, uprooting people from their family home and displacing them from their local communities,' Gerry Carroll said.

'In recent months, I have heard from an alarming number of tenants impacted by this cruel policy, including people with disabilities and others providing care for family members prior to their death. If evicted, most of these tenants will be forced into homelessness.

'I commend the tenants who are taking a stand against these senseless evictions. I encourage everyone to come to Wednesday’s meeting, to hear how residents on the frontline of the housing crisis are fighting back with the support of their local community.'

  • The meeting will be held at the Cultúrlann, Falls Road, at 7pm on Wednesday 19th March.
  • Speakers include Paddy McCabe, Caitriona McCrudden and the family of Marc Reid
  • Other speakers include representatives from Tar Isteach, CATU Belfast and Jack Murphy of McIvor Farrell Solicitors
