Anti Fascist Rally in Belfast Thursday

United Against Racism has called an anti-fascism rally in West Belfast following death threats against MLA Gerry Carroll.

Mr Carroll stated: 'These threats are a sign of desperation from the far right, which is utterly isolated in West Belfast, and only dares to emerge in the dead of night.

"Thousands of people have joined actions against racism in West Belfast in recent months, and we will do so again. I will not be deterred nor bullied by a minority who do not represent the good people of West Belfast."

Ivanka Antova, from United Against Racism Belfast, called on people to join the rally at Casement Park on Thursday.

"We are calling on people to join the rally to send a clear message against these vile threats and intimidation from the far right. We want Belfast to be a welcome place for minorities: one that celebrates diversity and rejects hate."

The anti-fascism rally is taking place at 7pm, Thursday 20th March, at Casement Park.

People Before Profit's Cllr Shaun Harkin from Derry said:

'A death threat scrawled on a West Belfast wall by a fringe fascist organisation against my party colleague, Socialist MLA Gerry Carroll, will not be tolerated. Far-right actors here have stepped up their activity since Trump's inauguration as US President.

'They have been emboldened by Trump’s reactionary policies targeting immigrants, women, the LGBTQ community and trade unions.  And they've been emboldened by billionaire Elon Musk's support for far-right personalities and groupings in Ireland and Europe.

'They're targeting Gerry because he has challenged the agenda of Trump, his billionaires and far-right opportunists who are attempting to blame migrants for housing scarcity, violence against women, crime and NHS waiting lists.'

But Gerry Carroll is not alone, the vast majority of people are opposed to the fascists and hatemongers.

The threat against People Before Profit's MLA Gerry Carroll is connected to anti-migrant protests on March 23rd and the attempt to intimate anyone opposed to their divisive agenda.

Cllr Mick Collins from Belfast added: 'Last summer we were told anti-immigration protests didn't involve the far-right and would be peaceful. The reality was the exact opposite. Far-right agitators were at the centre of the riots that targeted businesses, homes and people on the street. We appeal to anyone getting pulled in behind the anti-immigration agenda. They should think about who is actually promoting this and what their goals are.'
